Risk Management Services

Campus Safety

The Department of Risk Management Services (RMS) is a service and support unit in the Division of Business Affairs, coordinating the university's risk management effort through programs in campus and workplace safety, loss prevention, environmental compliance, and insurance programs for property, liability, and worker’s compensation.

RMS partners with the campus community to establish and maintain a safe environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. All members of the UArizona community are responsible for planning and conducting their activities to prevent injury and loss, maintaining compliance, and working with RMS to identify and manage risk effectively in support of the university mission.

Campus & Occupational Safety

RMS aids university supervisors and employees with implementation of effective safety programs. Prevention of accidents and injuries requires identification of hazardous conditions and practices, corrective action, accountability, and regular program evaluation.

Insurance

RMS oversees insurance coverage for university property, liability, worker’s compensation, and cyber risk. In addition to processing claims, RMS provides guidance on insurance and indemnification terms in contracts, collects extensive asset and exposure data, and works with the university community to evaluate risk exposures and develop effective loss prevention measures.

Environmental Safety

RMS manages several compliance programs for environmental protection, including hazardous and biological waste management, and administers regulatory permits governing wastewater discharge, stormwater, air quality, asbestos, and landfill monitoring.

Training

Many OSHA regulations governing workplace safety include required training for employees to ensure they know the hazards in their workplace and understand what is required to prevent accidents and injuries. RMS develops and maintains a wide variety of training programs for the benefit of the university community.

Code Compliance & Permits

RMS serves as the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for review, permitting, and inspection of construction and renovation projects in accordance with applicable fire and safety codes. AHJ status is based on delegated authority from the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The same authority is applied to the planning and approval of special events in campus facilities.
