Industrial Hygiene

University departments and units are required to furnish a workplace which is free from recognized hazards which may cause or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.  This includes, but is not limited to, compliance with all occupational health and safety codes and regulations (29 Code of Federal Regulations 1910 and 1926).  This health and safety responsibility is commensurate with a person's operational responsibilities and rests at all levels, from the highest administrative person to the individual employee.

Risk Management Services (RMS) has developed a number of OSHA-required, written programs that provide management guidance and outline the minimum requirements for achieving compliance with occupational health regulations.  University employees who want assistance in implementing effective occupational health programs to prevent the occurrence of injuries and illnesses that may result from exposure to chemical and physical hazards at work can also get free industrial hygiene consultation services from RMS.  Industrial Hygiene is the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of chemical and physical hazards in the workplace.
