University departments and units are required to furnish a workplace which is free from recognized hazards which may cause or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm. This includes, but is not limited to, compliance with all occupational health and safety codes and regulations (29 Code of Federal Regulations 1910 and 1926). This safety responsibility is commensurate with a person's operational responsibilities and rests at all levels, from the highest administrative person to the individual employee.

University employees who want assistance in implementing effective safety and health programs to prevent the occurrence of injuries and illnesses that may result from exposure to hazardous workplace conditions and work practices can get free Industrial Hygiene consultation services from Risk Management & Safety (RM&S). Industrial Hygiene is the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of chemical and physical hazards in the workplace.

Services

Note – Radiation safety (ionizing and non-ionizing) is handled by the Radiation Control Office. Some aspects of biological safety are handled by University Animal Care through the Animal Hazards Program and by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (see Other Resources section for contact information).
